About the Baby Boomers

Excerpts from ‘iBosses: The Rise of Gen y Entrepreneurs – The Momentum Behind the New Age of Entrepreneurs’ by Dr Patrick Khor

Baby Boomers

Early Baby Boomers were born from 1946 to 1951, while Late Baby Boomers were born from 1952 to 1964. Baby Boomers view “retirement as a work style, not as a lifestyle” (Smith & Clurman, 1997, p. 67).

Societal Context Shaping the Baby Boomers

The predispositions and orientation of Baby Boomers were primarily shaped by the Vietnam War, Watergate, the civil rights movement, the space race, as well as the sexual revolution.

Characteristics of Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers are talented and skillful. They also believe that they are influenced by the changing world (Hill, 2002; Stern, 2002). Baby Boomers grew up to be independent, striving to control their destiny as well as having the tendency to challenge authority (Davis, Pawlowski, & Houston, 2006). They also felt a degree of entitlement, expecting rewards in the future. Nevertheless, they are known for values such as teamwork, ambition, optimism, and diligence in everything that they do (Sessa et al., 2007).
